's bring in barbara starr at the pentagon for more on this potential chuck hagel nomination. we don't know if he'll be nominated yet. barbara, what are the attacks against hagel? >> classic washington trial balloon. the nomination isn't out, nomination hasn't been made, but the pins are sticking in that trial balloon. first, senator hagel apologized for comments he made back around 1997, 1998 when there was a man who was openly gay about to become an ambassador, hagel opposed all of that, made some comments about gay people. now he says all these years later he regrets it, it is not what he believes. and by all accounts members of those who represent pro gay rights movements in washington have accepted senator hagel's apology on that. item number two, a lot of questions about whether hagel is tough enough on iran. did he cast some votes in the senate that did not support sanctions against iran? number three, israel. this may be the one that gets the most traction and already has, in fact. a lot of pro israeli groups are saying that senator hagel simply isn't supportive enough of israel. be

an afghan police uniform. the latest in the series of green on blue insider attacks and our pentagon correspondent barbara starr joins us live with details on that. good morning. how unusual is this? >> well, alana, sadly this is a story we've report sod often during the year, haven't we? the details on this attack are different in one respect. as far as we know this is a case where a woman, an afghan woman in a police uniform conducted this shooting and killing. a contractor in cab uhl police headquarters. the nato alliance has already announced the incident but not said the nationality officially of the contractor involved. this typically does not happen where the perpetrator is a woman. they are going to have to determine, of course, if she really was an afghan police officer or perhaps the uniform was stolen or she somehow came into possession of it. a continuing issue in afghanistan the past several months. they are trying to work on it. keep an eye on things more closely. be aware when people who want to conduct these acts have basically infiltrated into a safe area, but again,

and military investigators are working on the belief that he took his own life. here's our pentagon correspondent barbara starr with what few details we have so far. >> reporter: very sad news this holiday weekend for u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s. the navy is investigating the death in afghanistan of one of its most senior deployed s.e.a.l. officers as an apparent suicide. a u.s. military official tells cnn. navy commander joe w price 42 years old, died december 22nd, while serving as the commanding officer of s.e.a.l. team 4. a group of more than 2 dozen commandos conducting combat operations in the southern command of the country. that u.s. military official who's directly familiar with the event said the family has been notified of the death, and has been notified and is being investigated as an apparent suicide. there is no indication at this time that commander price was involved in any military related investigations or any controversies the officials said. all indications are, when he did not appear at an expected time. other military personnel went to look for him and discovered his

about her identity. let's get that from barbara starr at the pentagon. hey, barbara. what are we learning about this woman and this attack? >> reporter: well, victor, all we know so far really is what the afghans are saying. there was a press conference with senior afghan ministry spokesman and he held up a very interesting passport, he says the passport of this woman and it is iranian, that she is an iranian citizen who came to afghanistan and married an afghan man. he also said she had some fake identity documents, but this is certainly raising the prospect that the shooter was iranian. so far, however, no indication yet she's tied to the taliban, that she is officially tied to iran at this point, or to any terrorist groups. by all accounts she came to kabul, police headquarters had a weapon hidden under her clothing, removed it, said she was looking for someone to shoot and walked out behind this u.s. contractor. he's now been identified as 49-year-old joseph griffin of mansfield, georgia, working for dime corp. international, a major u.s. firm working in afghanistan to help t

of the policy moves in the direction of the democrats, right? tax rates go up. big spending cuts at the pentagon. and all the polls show that the republicans are going to be blamed for all of this. so obama -- as the one guy in this town that wants a deal more than anyone. on the other hand, he's probably the guy that purely political benefits the most after january 3rd satisfy in a stronger negotiating position. he'll also have, remember, a few more democrats in the house and in the senate. so the white house will be strengthened after this happens. but a lot of people in the white house and treasury department don't want that to happen because they think the markets may freak out. already the markets are reacting to the news within the last hour. yesterday the markets dipped a little bit on reid's comments in the senate. so they are worried about the economy. i think purely politically, obama will be strengthened once we go over. >> ryan lizza, thank very much. it's going to be an interesting couple of days. >> yeah, it sure is. >> thanks, ryan. >>> weapons of war on the streets of los angeles

at the pentagon. barbara, there's outrage from a lot of folks about this. the nra came out pretty strong about arming the schools. is there any kind of middle ground here from those who say, look, we want to stop gun violence, but there has to be a better way to protect the children? >> the nra didn't double down on what it wants, which is a focus on armed security personnel in schools. what other people say, suzanne, is, look, that's not a new idea. school districts have grappled with security for years, and some have gone this way. even in the 1999 terrible massacre at columbine high school in colorado, there was an armed security person on the school grounds at that time. it helped a little bit, but obviously, not able to stop what happened there. the people who want to see another way to go, many in congress are talking about a package of solutions. some new measures on gun control. some new measures on high-powered magazines. taking another look the at school safety. taking a look at how this country deals with with those who are mentally ill. this package of solutions they say that the p
